Arizona Gives Day hopes to unite state in charitable actions

Giving — even just a little — can make a tremendous difference for a charitable organization.

Now imagine when people make a concerted effort on a single day. The impact can be tremendous.

April 4th is Arizona Gives Day, designed to encourage Arizonans to give and support their favorite charities and organizations.

“Arizona Gives Day is a powerful 24-hour online giving experience that unites Arizonans around causes they believe in. The single, statewide day of giving has raised $7.4 million for Arizona nonprofits since 2013,” the movement’s website notes.

It’s all about collective giving, and supporting organizations that have an impact on needs within our state. And because donors can choose where their funds go, each donor can have a direct impact on Yuma County.

Donors to the site can select local organizations, such as Friends of the Yuma County Libraries, which advocates and fundraises for our local library district. Or United Way, which notes it “will help lift 10,000 families out of poverty by 2025.”

In fact, a variety of Yuma organizations are taking part, including The Yuma Community Food Bank, Yuma Conservation Garden, the Yuma Territory Live Steamers, the Arizona Wsteen College Foundation, Crossroads Mission, Healing Journey, Saddles of Joy, the Freedom Library, and Ballet Yuma.

Donors can also choose from a wide variety of organizations from across the state of Arizona, which allows people to reach out and support the groups about which they are passionate, regardless of distance.

When people give together, donating en masse, organizations get an immediate boost, an influx of cash donations to use as needed.

If $1 can buy a jar of peanut butter for the Yuma Community Food Bank, think about how many families could benefit from $200. That’s a lot of peanut butter!
