SAN LUIS, Ariz. — Nathania Nuno faces what could be a difficult decision concerning her future education.

Does she go to U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., or the Naval Academy or the Air Force Academy?

Thanks to high academic achievement at San Luis High School, plus recommendations by U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva and U.S. Sen. John McCain, she’s been accepted to all three.

The 18-year-old senior’s decision could get more complicated if she gets accepted to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and to the Merchant Marine Academy. She’s applied to those two institutions as well.

“I’m very happy,” she said. “It’s an honor to be able to represent my community and my country. And it takes off a lot of stress knowing how I’m going to be able to go to a college or university.

Students receive free tuition, room and board and medical care while attending the military academies, in return for serving in the armed forces.

Nuno is the first San Luis resident ever to receive an appointment to any of the military academies.

The official documents of acceptance to West Point and the Air Force Academy were presented to her recently at San Luis High School by Joe Britain, a Naval Academy admissions officer. Martha Garcia, who heads Grijalva’s office in Yuma County, also presented Nuno a letter of recognition from the lawmaker.

She has also received verbal notification of her acceptance to the Naval Academy.

Nuno, who maintains a 4.183 grade point average and is a varsity athlete for the school, is the daughter of Javier Nuno, a lieutenant for the Wellton Police Department.

Javier Nuno, a former captain in the San Luis Police Department and an Army veteran, said he’s proud of his daughter’s drive in pursuing her goals.

“It’s an honor, because she is going to serve the country,” he said. “A lot of people who have other options choose to go to the military academies.”
