Phoenix police shoot man breaking into a home after scuffle

PHOENIX — Phoenix police say they shot a man who had broken into a home on the city’s south side.

Sgt. Alan Pfohl says two officers were called shortly before 4 p.m. by neighbors who said that someone appeared to be breaking into a vacant home near 15th Avenue and Pima Street.

Pfohl says the officers entered the house and confronted a man, who then got into a scuffle with one of the officers.

He says the man grabbed the officer’s gun and fired a shot near the officer’s leg that went into the floor.

Pfohl says another officer shot the man in the right leg, and the man was arrested shortly thereafter.

The sergeant says the man is being treated for his injuries.

Pfohl says the officer who shot the suspect is 36 years old, and the second officer is 29. Both have been on the force for more than a year. stable condition at a children’s hospital trauma center.

Hikers hurt in Arizona mountains rescued

PHOENIX — Authoritie­s say they’ve rescued two women hurt in separate incidents Sunday along the mountains in Arizona.

The Phoenix fire department said the first woman appeared to have broken her leg while hiking Piestewa Peak. She had lost her balance and fell while about a third of the way up the mountain.

She was in extreme pain and crying out when helicopter crews reached her. The 31-year-old woman received intravenou­s pain medication­s and was taken to a hospital trauma center.

The fire department also said it rescued a 36-year-old woman biking with her husband at South Mountain.

She lost control at a hill and fell off her bike, injuring her knee and suffering deep scrapes to her face and arms.

She was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Flagstaff student posted notes about school being bombed

FLAGSTAFF— Authoritie­s say a student at a Flagstaff middle school is facing punishment after posting notes around campus saying someone should bomb the school.

The Arizona Daily Sun reports police Sgt. Cory Runge says the Sinagua Middle School student won’t face criminal charges but will be “held accountabl­e for her actions.”

Police say the notes discovered Tuesday didn’t make any specific threats but they did mention two teachers, the after-school detention program and that the school should be bombed.

Officers used surveillan­ce footage and talked with staff to narrow down a suspect.

Police says the girl admitted to leaving the notes because she was upset about getting after-school detention.

Good Samaritan neighbor shot by home burglars in Arizona

AVONDALE, — Authoritie­s say a neighbor was shot as he tried to stop a home burglary in Arizona near Phoenix.

Avondale police say the man was being a Good Samaritan when he was shot at by the group of three burglars.

The neighbor, who lives near the home, was found shot at the scene before being taken to the hospital with non-life threatenin­g injuries.

Police say he’s in stable condition.

The suspects in the Saturday night burglary are described as three men.

Authoritie­s also believe they fired shots at a woman’s car as she was driving in the area at the time. She wasn’t injured.
