SOMERTON — Residents on Somerton’s north side will benefit from smoother roads later this year, following reconstruction of George Street.

DPE Construction of Yuma, awarded the contract for the work in March, will begin work on the street by the second week of May, with the project due to be completed within 90 days, Somerton Public Works Director Samuel Palacios said.

The work, one in a series of projects in the city’s ongoing program to upgrade Somerton streets, consists of rebuilding George Street between Somerton and Carlisle avenues, and reconstruction of Union Avenue between George and Spring streets.

DPE will remove the existing paving and sidewalks, apply a new road base and new asphalt, and build new sidewalks with curbs and storm water collectors.

DPE, the lowest among three bidders seeking the contract, submitted a bid that was 20 percent less than the anticipated cost.

The project, estimated to cost a little more than $405,000, is being financed with money from the city’s issue of a $2.3 million bond in 2015 for road improvements.

Palacios said funds remaining from the bond issue, about $760,000, will be used to rebuild George between Somerton and Columbia Avenues, and rebuild Musgrove and Columbia avenues between George and Spring streets.

He said the city will soon seek bids for that project, with construction beginning as soon as June.
