San Luis baseball gets No. 4 seed in 6A tourney
Kofa, Yuma Cath., San Pasqual also learn state draws
The San Luis baseball team jumped five spots between the final day of the regular season and release of the final 6A state rankings Thursday, receiving the No. 4 seed for the 6A state tournament.
Three other local baseball teams — Kofa (No. 11 in 6A), Yuma Catholic (No. 5 in 3A) and San Pasqual (No. 7 in 1A) — also learned their postseason draws Thursday, when the 16-team state tournament brackets were revealed for all six classifications.
San Luis (15-3 AIA) will be the only one of the four hosting a first-round game, as the Sidewinders will open at home against No. 13 Boulder Creek (8-12) — which beat Cibola, 4-1, in the play-in round Wednesday — at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Sidewinders entered the week ranked No. 9 before beating then-No. 2 Sunnyside, 2-0, in 6A Southern Region championship game on Monday.
No. 11 Kofa (12-7), meanwhile, will travel to Gilbert on Saturday to face No. 6 Perry (12-6) in the first round. The Kings beat Alhambra, 4-3, in the play-in round Wednesday.
Saturday’s 6A games will be of the win-or-go-home variety, as the tournament doesn’t shift to double elimination until the round of eight.
The single-elimination 3A and 1A tournaments don’t begin until next Friday, and will be played at a neutral site. In 3A, No. 5 Yuma Catholic (14-2) will face No. 12 Blue Ridge (9-10) at 4 p.m. in Surprise. In 1A, No. 7 San Pasqual (10-6) will face No. 10 Ash Fork (10-5) at 4 p.m. in Goodyear.
