Yuma Catholic softball advances to quarterfin­als

The second-seeded Yuma Catholic softball team opened the 3A state tournament with a 12-5 victory over No. 15 Page on Saturday in Phoenix.

Alyssa Matus led the way offensivel­y for the Shamrocks, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Kayla Browning went 1-for2 with a double and three RBIs.

YC (18-1 AIA) moves on to face No. 7 Snowflake in the quarterfin­als next Friday.

PREP BASEBALL (6) Perry 2, (11) Kofa 0

The only scoring in Saturday’s first-round game of the 6A State Tournament was a two-run home run by Perry’s Matty Brown in the fourth inning. The Kings (12-8 AIA) managed just two hits off Ty Pohlman, who threw a completega­me shutout to end Kofa’s season.

Kofa lefty Damien Rinehart allowed two runs and two hits with four strikeouts.

The Arizona Western baseball team swept a doublehead­er against South Mountain on Saturday to clinch a spot in the fourteam Region I playoffs.

The Matadors, who entered the day tied with Yavapai for the final playoff spot, won 3-1 in game one and 3-2 in game two (in 10 innings).

Eric Ligda was the winning pitcher in game one, allowing just one run on three hits in seven innings of work. Landon Riker (2for-3, double) led the way offensivel­y.

In game two, Sean Roby delivered a walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the 10th that drove in Snaider Torrealba, who walked to lead off the inning. Roby also had an RBI single in the sixth inning.

Irving Martin was the game-one starter for the Matadors (38-18 overall, 2016 ACCAC) and struck out two batters in nine innings; neither of the runs he allowed were earned.

Landon Riker collected two hits in each game, while Spencer Packard went 3-for-5 in game two.

AWC will face Cochise in a best-of-three series on the road beginning Thursday in the Region I semifinals.
