YC softball wins in semis
AWC baseball takes Game 3 at Cochise in region semifinals
Yuma Catholic softball won for the second consecutive day, this time in the 3A State Tournament semifinals against Sabino. The 3-0 win Saturday means the No. 2 Shamrocks (15-1 AIA) will play in the program’s firstever state championship game Tuesday in Tempe.
Pitcher Alyssa Matus dominated Sabino, the 11seed. Matus threw a complete-game shutout, with two hits allowed and six strikeouts.
On offense, Josie Hernandez was 1-for-3 with all three of the team’s runs batted in. Faith Sandoval went 1-for-2.
Yuma Catholic’s opponent in the title game is No. 12 Empire, which upset No. 1 River Valley on Saturday by a score of 7-5. The state championship is Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Farrington Softball Stadium, the home for Arizona State.
JUCO BASEBALL AWC 8, Cochise 2
The Matadors scored six unanswered runs in the final two innings to win, 8-2, in the three-game, regionalsemifinal series against Cochise on Saturday in Douglas.
Irving Martin (seven innings, six hits, two earned runs, one walk, six strikeouts) got the win for the Matadors to send them to the Region I Championship series at Central Arizona next week.
Daniel Lafarga (2-for-3, two runs, two RBIs, double, home run) and Landon Riker (1-for-3, two runs, double, two walks) led the way for AWC on offense.
PREP TRACK State meet wraps up
The AIA Track and Field State Championships wrapped up Saturday at Mesa Community College, but full results were not available as of Saturday night. Check Monday’s Yuma Sun for results.
