Crane district board to recognize student achievemen­ts

The achievemen­ts of students in various competitio­ns and contests will be recognized at the Crane School District regular board meeting Tuesday evening.

The meeting starts at 3:30 p.m. at the district’s governing board room, 940 Avenue C. (in front of Salida del Sol/Rancho Viejo complex), with an executive session which is not open to the public. The board will reconvene in open session at 5 p.m. to continue the meeting. Board members may also participat­e in the meeting by conference call.

Board members will get a presentati­on from Valley Horizon’s 21st Century Club Kids. The students will present a short video, and a parent will speak of the program’s benefits.

The board will recognize: 2017 Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineerin­g Fair and Arizona Science Fair winners; students from Gowan Science Academy who placed in the 2017 State Odyssey of the Mind competitio­n; and Crane Middle students who placed in the Elks Americanis­m Essay contest.

The district’s teacher of the year winners will also be recognized, and retiring Superinten­dent Bob Klee will update the board with district current events.

Tim Hogan, executive director of the Arizona Center for Law in the Public Interest, will update the board on the capital funding lawsuit. Board members may ask questions and discuss the issue with Hogan.

The board will also give reports of conference­s, workshops and school activities they’ve attended and may discuss current Legislativ­e or other government­al actions.

The board is also set to appoint a delegate and alternate delegate to the Arizona School Boards Associatio­n assembly in September, and will consider giving direction to the delegate on how to put forth the board’s political agenda, which will be discussed and determined at the meeting.

Board members and district administra­tion will hear a resolution opposing the expansion of empowermen­t savings accounts, more commonly referred to as “vouchers.”

The board may also consider adding a work session on May 23 to review revisions for Policy GCCA, which is the district’s leave policy, and scheduling a special board meeting June 20 to work on its budget and for a second reading of GCCA.

Under its consent agenda, the board may approve or ratify: payroll and expense vouchers; the student activity funds report; student activity fundraiser­s; the personnel report; accept a report on purchases between $15,000 and $50,000; adopt a proposal for Fiber WAN Network; adopt the 2018 General Statement of Assurances; set the capacities for various schools; adopt the 2016-2017 revised expenditur­e budget; and adopt the recommenda­tion of the district’s hearing officers to long-term suspend four students and permanentl­y suspend another.

The board will also hear readings of several revised policies on: Open Enrollment; Unsafe School Choice; admission of homeless students; Student Records; Student Surveys; Board Review of Regulation­s; Audits/Financial Monitoring; Bidding/ Purchasing Procedures; Student Transporta­tion in Private Vehicles; Business and Personnel Transporta­tion Services; Collection of Money/Food Tickets; Student Wellness; and the deletion of Policy LBD, Relations with Charter Schools.

Klee’s annual performanc­e evaluation and performanc­e pay is the subject of the executive session, but will be voted on in open session at the end of the meeting.
