Tucson police arrest suspect in fatal shooting of teenager

TUCSON — Police in Tucson say they’ve arrested a suspect wanted in a recent shooting that turned fatal.

They say 27-year-old Nathan Mayo was spotted Wednesday on the east side of Tucson and taken into custody without incident.

Police say Mayo is being booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of second-degree murder.

They say 17-year-old Carl Thompson was found shot in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant on May 8 and died a week later.

Police say a woman was dropped off at the restaurant by Mayo to meet with her boyfriend and his family.

While in the parking lot, police say an argument ensued between Mayo, the boyfriend and Thompson, who was the boyfriend’s brother.

Police say Mayo pointed a handgun at the boyfriend before allegedly shooting Thompson.

Mesa councilman taking a leave of absence after DUI arrest

MESA — A Mesa city councilman says he’s taking a voluntary leave of absence after being arrested recently on suspicion of driving while intoxicate­d.

Ryan Winkle said at a news conference Wednesday that he will undergo counseling as he works to resolve his legal issues.

With his wife at his side at the podium, Winkle apologized to his fellow city council members, Mayor John Giles and “the children and young people of Mesa” and also asked voters for their forgivenes­s.

Tempe police say Winkle was given a criminal citation for DUI on May 7 after the car he was driving was reportedly weaving in the roadway before it was pulled over.

Police say Winkle exhibited signs and symptoms consistent with impairment during the traffic stop.

Giles plans to discuss Winkle’s situation Thursday.

Police release ID of armed homicide suspect shot by officer

PHOENIX — Phoenix police have released the identity of an armed homicide suspect fatally shot by a police officer during a confrontat­ion at a public garden.

Police say 27-year-old Jonie Block was killed Monday several hours after 55-year-old Todd Landon was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

According to police, an officer shot Block after she refused commands and began to walk toward people in a park.

Police say they found Block at the garden after she pointed a gun at a cafe employee who followed her from the nearby business to talk to her about her bill at the cafe, where she had sat for several hours.

Police have said Block and Landon knew each other and that Block was attempting to establish a relationsh­ip with Landon but he wasn’t interested.
