Woman killed in rollover near Somerton
Fatal crash is second in recent days for area after youth dies of injuries from earlier accident
A 34-year-old woman died early Tuesday in a vehicle rollover, in what was the second fatal accident to occur near Somerton in less than four days.
Sonia Burgos Salazar, a Somerton resident, was driving west on County 14th Street between Avenues F and G at around 2:30 a.m. when the Ford 150 left the roadway and overturned, the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office said.
She was ejected from the vehicle and later declared dead at the scene of the accident, YCSO stated.
Meanwhile, one of two youths has died of injuries suffered when the all-terrain vehicle they were riding landed in an irrigation canal near Somerton Friday afternoon, Somerton police said. Police are not releasing the name of the 16-year-old victim.
According to YCSO, the black pickup truck left the south side of County 14, struck a canal bank and
rolled over. Burgos Salazar was the only passenger in the vehicle.
An employee of a nearby agricultural shop heard the noise and called 911, according to a news release from the Somerton Cocopah Fire Department, which sent firefighters to the scene to give aid.
The accident remains under investigation by YSCO. The sheriff’s office asks anyone with information about the case to call 928783-4427 or 78-CRIME.
The second minor injured in the ATV accident on Friday remains in a Phoenix-area hospital, Somerton police said. A report on his condition was not immediately available.
Neither of the two youths were wearing helmets while riding an ATV south on an access road to a canal near Avenue E and County 17th Street about 1 p.m. Friday, according to the fire department.
The two riders were flung into canal when the road came to an abrupt end and the ATV struck the canal bank, the fire department said.
The canal was filled with about three feet of water, and a passer-by held the youths’ head above water while calling 911, the fire department said.
Both youths suffered serious injuries, with one being brought to Yuma Regional Medical Center by a fire department ambulance and the other flown by helicopter to a Phoenix-area hospital.
