7 local baseball players receive AIA all-conference recognitio­n

A number of local baseball and softball players earned AIA all-state honors for their performanc­es this season.

Seven baseball players received all-state recognitio­n in some form, with San Luis senior pitcher Gabriel Ponce being named first team all-state for 6A, Yuma Catholic senior Daniel Miranda being named 3A Offensive Player of the Year, Yuma Catholic senior Blake Sandoval being named 3A Defensive Player of the Year and San Pasqual junior Frankie Rodriguez being named 1A first team all-state.

The other three baseball players to receive some form of all-state recognitio­n were: Kofa’s Enrique Porchas (6A second team), Yuma Catholic’s Ricky Carrazco (3A honorable mention), San Pasqual’s Alex Zavala (1A second team).

As for softball, Yuma Catholic had three players receive all-state recognitio­n for the 3A level: freshman Jose Hernandez (first team), sophomore Sandra Felix (second team) and senior Alyssa Matus (honorable mention).

As for all-region recognitio­n, the following local players were named first team for their respective regions:

6A Southern baseball first team: San Luis’ Ramon Miranda (POY), Gabriel Ponce, David Mota, Jesus Pulido (Co-OPOY) and Gerarado Hernandez; Kofa’s Enrique Porchas and Kevin Avila

4A Southwest baseball first team: Gila Ridge’s Ramces Urias, Gimo Dukes and Ryan Hoskins

3A Metro baseball first team: Yuma Catholic’s Daniel Miranda (POY), Blake Sandoval, Ricky Carrazco and Aidan Rodriguez

2A Metro baseball first team: Brody Harris

1A West baseball first team: San Pasqual’s Frankie Rodriguez (DPOY), Alex Zavala, Rafael Dominguez and Victor Alvarez

6A Southern softball first team: Cibola’s Jannay Jones, Madison Sierra, Christena Robles, Ela Henry, Nicole Villa (CoOPOY) and Cielo Echols; Kofa’s Samantha Morales and Chloe Garcia (Co-DPOY); and San Luis’ Katia Sandoval and Kiabeth Soto.

4A Southwest softball first team: Gila Ridge’s Mckenna Casas, Jenna Etchepare, Yassiel Lazo, Amanda Rubida and Aylin Campa
