The Rural/Metro Fire Department responded to a mutual aid request Wednesday afternoon from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to help with a brush fire burning along the Colorado River in Mexico.

Spokesperson Charly McMurdie said Rural/Metro currently has two engines and a battalion chief on scene in the vicinity County 9 1/2 Street and the levy road in case the fire jumps the river again and to help with structure protection.

“The fire, which is burning near Algodones, Mexico, did jump the river once, but BLM firefighters put it out pretty quick,” McMurdie said.

McMurdie said Rural/Metro received the request at about 3:49 p.m. and will remain on scene until no longer needed.

She added that smoke being generated by the fire will stay low to the ground due to the clouds and people who live in the vicinity need to take precautions.”
