Yuma MVD changes great for customers

New approach means shorter wait times at office

If you are headed to the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division office in Yuma, we’ve got some good news for you.

Changes made to the office recently have slashed customer wait times in half, according to a report in the Yuma Sun.

Once upon a time, going to the DMV was a dreaded task, which could take what felt like a long time, depending on what one had to do there.

In fact, for the week of May 8-12, the average customer spent 22 minutes at the Yuma DMV office, compared to 37 minutes in April, officials said.

The numbers continued to improve, as during the week of May 15-19, the average visit dropped to under 20 minutes.

It’s easy for businesses and organizati­ons to fall into a rut. Methods for doing business are establishe­d, and then those methods become routine.

But as time goes on, better ways to do those same functions might appear. All it takes is stepping back from the routine and asking a few simple questions: What are we doing? Can we do it better? How do we improve our customer service experience?

And that’s precisely what’s happened at the DMV office. The agency has removed the waiting room chairs, replacing them with a queue system in which people wait in line.

Customers still get a ticket upon entering with a letter and number, to indicate what transactio­n they need, but an MVD employee works with the customer to make sure that everything needed to proceed with the transactio­n is on hand before the customer ever reaches the window.

The approach stemmed from an office in west Phoenix, where employees saw a way to improve customer service, and then piloted the ideas for almost a year before rolling it out to other offices.

In the end, the customer is the winner, because the process is faster and more efficient.

All it took was thinking outside the box, and an organizati­on willing to listen to new ideas.
