New director named for Mexican consular post in Yuma
The consular official who oversaw programs and services for Mexican nationals living in the Yuma area has been relieved three months after having been named to the post.
Sabrina Cuevas was replaced earlier this month by Rocio Garcia as head of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, which is part of the Mexican Consulate in Yuma.
The institute, which is part of Mexico’s Foreign Ministry, provides educational, financial, cultural, health and other programs aimed at improving the quality of life of expatriates here. The institute’s Yuma office served Mexican citizens in La Paz County as well as Yuma County.
Alejandro Mendoza, who works for the Mexican consulate in Yuma, said Cuevas’ contract was not renewed at the end of her three-month probationary period in the post.
Garcia, 27, a graduate from Autonomous University of Baja California with degrees in public administration and political science, previously held positions with the Mexican consulate in both Omaha, Neb., and Yuma.
As new director of the institute in Yuma, Garcia’s responsibilities will include helping to start a new program offering credit counseling and other financial services to expatriates, organizing cultural events, and establishing partnerships with community organizations in the Yuma area to better service residents of Mexican nationality.
