Superhero gear could be really useful
What skill, talent or piece of gear appeals most to you?
Superhero movies are often a refreshing bit of fun. The Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy — the first films for each of these series were big-screen enjoyment.
I loved them all, and Marvel set the bar high with these films.
Then I took my daughter and her friend to see DC Comics’ Wonder Woman, which vaulted right over that bar into the next level of awesome.
The film is amazing. As a parent of a daughter, it is spectacular to see a female superhero like this.
Don’t get me wrong. Black Widow has had a strong run in several Marvel films, but she has yet to get the spotlight alone, although there are rumors that her own film is finally in the works.
I won’t go into any details at all here about the Wonder Woman film, but it did get me thinking about superhero skills and their gear, especially that golden lasso of truth.
Thor has his hammer, Mjolnir, which gives him the ability to fly, and allows him to manipulate the weather.
Iron Man has his suit which is an exoskeleton of sorts, allowing him to fly and giving him added strength and weapons. Bruce Banner transforms into the Hulk, Spider-Man is strong and super agile, and he’s got those handy web-shooters, too. Batman has a literal arsenal of fun toys, including that sleek Batmobile.
But Wonder Woman’s gear includes an item that might be the best of all: the golden lasso of truth. The lasso forces people to tell the truth.
As a journalist, the lasso of truth holds tremendous appeal. Imagine knowing with certainty that every word spoken was the truth, because the lasso so compelled it?
And imagine the potential in politics! If politicians at every level of government were forced to tell the truth, especially during campaign season, government would be a much different place. And trust between the people and the government would likely soar.
Don’t get me wrong. The thought of flight or superhuman strength has a certain amount of appeal. But there’s no denying the allure of a lasso of truth!
