Godley, Drury lead D-Backs past Brewers

PHOENIX — Zack Godley allowed two hits over 6 2-3 innings, Brandon Drury hit the go-ahead two-run home run and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 on Saturday night.

Rey Fuentes tripled and scored for the Diamondbacks, who had their nine-game home winning streak snapped in a loss to the Brewers on Friday.

Hernan Perez accounted for both Milwaukee runs with his second homer in as many nights.

Godley (2-1) allowed two runs, struck out four, walked one and hit a batter. Andrew Chafin, Archie Bradley and Fernando Rodney held the Brewers hitless in relief.

Domingo Santana walked to start the Brewers ninth but was thrown out by Chris Iannetta trying to steal second and Rodney earned his 16th save in 19 tries.

Junior Guerra (1-1) permitted three runs on five hits in six innings in a strong outing for Milwaukee.

The Brewers led 2-1 through five innings and Guerra retired David Peralta and Paul Goldschmidt to start the sixth. But Chris Owings singled to bring up Drury, who worked the count to 3-2 and hit the next pitch over the wall in left to give the Diamondbacks a 3-2 lead.

Royals blow out Padres

SAN DIEGO — Lorenzo Cain hit two homers, including a grand slam that capped a nine-run rally in the eighth inning that sent the Kansas City Royals over the San Diego Padres 12-6 Saturday.

The Royals trailed 5-3 when Cain led off the eighth with an infield single. Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez followed with home runs off Brad Hand (1-4) to put Kansas City ahead.

Cain’s second career slam came off Jose Valdez. Padres pitchers got only one out in the inning before the Royals bolted to a big lead.

Cain also hit a solo shot in the sixth, and has six home runs this season. Perez hit his 100th career homer — he has homered in three straight games at Petco Park, one of them in the All-Star Game last July.

Injured Sharapova pulls out of Wimbledon, grass circuit

PARIS — Maria Sharapova is skipping the grass-court season and will not try to qualify for Wimbledon because she has not recovered from an injured left thigh.

The five-time major champion and former No. 1-ranked player announced Saturday in a posting on her official Facebook account that “an additional scan” showed that the muscle tear she got at the Italian Open last month will not allow her to return to competition yet.

“I will continue to work on my recovery,” her message said.

The agency that represents Sharapova confirmed that she will be sidelined until what she called her “next scheduled event,” the hard-court tournament in Stanford, California, that begins on July 31.

Sharapova recently returned to the tour after a 15-month doping ban. She tested positive for the newly banned drug meldonium at the Australian Open in January 2016.

Because her ranking, No. 178 this week, is still too low for direct entry into main draws, Sharapova has been participating in tournaments via wild-card invitations, beginning on red clay at Stuttgart, Germany, in April. She received a wild card for the grass-court event at Birmingham, England, which begins on June 19, but will now have to miss that tournament.

The 30-year-old Russian was denied a wild card for the French Open, which she has won twice.
