16th Street and 4th Avenue

This week, isolated lane closures may still be possible in the 16th Street and 4th Avenue intersection area to complete work on fencing and on a monument wall which is part of the project. Then, crews will be pouring concrete slabs for the installation of YCAT bus stations near the intersection. Once the bus stations are in, all lanes in the intersection are expected to remain open full time.

22nd Street, 4th Avenue to Avenue A

A contractor working for the city is making improvements to 22nd Street between 4th Avenue and Avenue A. Work will include replacing the roadway itself, as well as replacing 1950s-era water pipes, and improving curbs, gutters and sidewalks. The current phase of this 90-day project will take place between 4th Avenue and 8th Avenue; 22nd Street is closed to through traffic between 4th-8th Avenues.

To access the U.S. Post Office prior to Monday, drivers should take 22nd Street from northbound 6th Avenue, and follow the detour signs to enter the parking lot through the post office’s western driveway. Cars will be able to exit the post office via southbound 4th Avenue.

As of Monday, a temporary driveway will be constructed into the post office from 4th Avenue at 22nd Street, so access into their parking lot should come from that location. Post office exit will continue to be the parking lot’s south driveway, which is one-way onto southbound 4th Avenue.

Avenue 3E, north of 40th Street

Crews will be installing a new conduit line along the Avenue 3E roadway near its intersection with 40th Street, requiring a lane closure in the area. While work is underway, northbound traffic on Avenue 3E will be asked to keep left. The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph. Work is anticipated to be complete by Friday.

Araby Road, 32nd Street slurry seal (ADOT)

A slurry seal project to extend the lifetime of pavement on Araby Road and 32nd Street near their intersection will require alternating double lane closures on the old U.S. Highway 80 and on 32nd Street for a total of four days. The project is scheduled to start Monday and finish Friday.

Pacific Avenue slurry seal (ADOT)

Crews will be placing a slurry seal on a portion of Pacific Avenue as part of a project by ADOT to extend the roadway’s lifespan. The project will take place on Pacific Avenue between the railroad crossing and 18th Street, requiring lane closures while crews are in the area applying slurry seal. Signs will be posted along Pacific Avenue to alert drivers to the reduced speed limit, lane closures and to direct through the work zone. The project is expected to take four days to complete and will take place between Monday and Friday.

Avenue 8-1/2E, County 11th Street slurry seal (ADOT)

Crews will be placing a slurry seal on a portion of Avenue 8-1/2E near County 11th Street, also as part of an ADOT slurry seal project. The project will require lane closures while crews are applying slurry seal along Avenue 8-1/2E near its intersection with County 11th Street. Signs will be posted along Avenue 8-1/2E and in the general area to alert drivers to the reduced speed limit, lane closures and to direct through the work zone. Pedestrian crosswalks will be maintained at all times. The project is expected to take four days to complete and will take place between Monday and Friday.

I-8, Giss Parkway - ADOT

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will maintain two-way traffic on Giss Parkway and access to businesses near the work zone. The westbound off- and on-ramps at I-8 and Giss Parkway remain closed through mid-July.

This is part of an ADOT project to improve the interchange area of westbound Interstate 8 and Giss Parkway, and will take approximately seven months to complete. The $1.8 million project will consist of the construction of a two-lane roundabout at the interchange to accommodate commercial trucks and other large vehicles. Work will also improve drainage, intersection lighting, signage and lane striping. Drivers will be asked to use alternate routes, including the 16th Street exit. The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced. Drivers should watch for construction personnel and equipment, and obey all posted speed limits and signs.

16th Street, avenues B-C

A city of Yuma landscaping project is currently underway, aiming to improve Rancho Viejo II subdivision’s basin and irrigation system which is located near the south side of 16th Street between avenues B and C. Work is to be completed by mid-June and is not expected to have any major traffic implications, aside from some traffic control at the time when trucks arrive to deliver material needed for the project.

Araby Road, I-8 waterline relocation

A project to relocate a waterline on Araby Road near its intersection with Interstate 8 is underway with estimated completion in June. Drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible. This work precedes a series of roundabout installations ADOT has planned for this vicinity.

8th Street, Castle Dome and Pacific Avenue

8th Street is closed between Castle Dome and Pacific Avenue. Pacific Avenue is closed to through traffic north of 12th Street, and closed to all traffic north of 8th Street. Roadway, water and sewer work is being done in conjunction with the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex. Detour by using 12th Street between Pacific and Castle Dome Avenue. The project is anticipated to be complete in late summer.

Avenue 3E/U.S. 95

A nine-month project to widen and improve both U.S. 95 and Avenue 3E is currently underway.

Highway 95 is reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction from Avenue 3E to Araby Road (a stretch of approximately 3.5 miles) as part of the construction for this project. The speed limit in the area will be reduced to 25 mph. The $3.2 million project will widen both roads to five lanes and to include a turn lane. Work will take place on Avenue 3E from north of the Interstate 8 interchange to past the U.S. 95 intersection, as well as on U.S. 95 from about 500 feet west of the Avenue 3E intersection to just past the Araby Road intersection. Both roads are expected to remain open with lane restrictions in place while the project is underway. Drivers are asked to find alternate routes to avoid potential delays. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will maintain access to businesses in the work zone and keep both roadways open during construction. The project is scheduled to be completed by August.

I-8 west of 4th Avenue Caltrans

Caltrans crews continue to work on the reconstruction of Interstate 8 in Imperial County, west of Yuma. Caltrans have closed westbound Interstate 8 ramps at Algodones Road/State Route 186 (SR-186) due to ongoing construction. Signs will be in place to alert motorists to the ramp closures and alternate routes. The closures and detours will be in place through August. Crews continue work on I-8 from SR-111 to the California/Arizona border in Imperial County. Lane closures and traffic closures along I-8 may cause delays.

The I-8 corridor is a major pavement rehabilitation project consisting of five segments that will construct Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) over 48 miles on Interstate 8 in Imperial County. The work will result in a long-lasting superior roadway, capable of withstanding the heaviest traffic loads. Construction began in 2016 on three of the five segments. Work will be completed by 2019.

City street maintenance

Asphalt maintenance crews will conduct operations Monday through Friday in various locations as needed:

• 32nd Street, from Catalina Drive to Arizona Avenue (crack seal)

• 32nd Street, from Arizona Avenue to South Avenue 3E (crack seal)

During this crack seal project, the speed limit in the sections of 32nd Street listed above will be reduced to 25 mph. Traffic control signs will be in place.

• Arizona Avenue, 32nd Street to Country Club Drive (grinding)

• 4th Avenue, 25th to 28th streets (grinding)
