Yuma families can learn to stay fit even in the heat

- Jen Woltman

There is no need to tell anyone in Yuma that it is hot. It’s that time of year again when the heat keeps us inside and out of the sun. As a wellness coach, I spend a majority of my day educating and encouraging individuals on healthy tips and ways to stay well. Having lived in Yuma for five summers now, I feel I have learned many ways to help maintain and improve one’s fitness level regardless of age or current fitness level. Families are planning vacations, staycations and schedules for kids over the summer. Let’s think about ways to stay fit even in the heat.

Live Well 360 suggests that “exercising outdoors can have numerous advantages. The heat can improve your fitness level by challenging your body and mind.” Important things to think about when exercising in the heat are:

• Dress appropriately: Moisture-wicking materials are ideal.

• Stay hydrated: Drinking water prior, during and after working out is a must. If you lose a lot of sweat, you might consider a beverage with salt and electrolytes to replenish lost fluids.

• Take it slow: New to Yuma? New to working out? Be sure you acclimate yourself to the extreme heat.

• Avoid peak hours: The best time to exercise during the Yuma summer is early in the morning or late evenings. This could be a great opportunity for families to wake up and start the day with an energizing walk before temperatures rise.

• Slather on sunscreen: Be sure to remember your sun safety. Sunscreen, hats and UV protective clothing can help keep you cool and prevent exposure to the sun.

Yuma has so many opportunities to incorporate fitness into your daily routine as a family. Here are some ideas for local favorites:

• Visit a community park during non-peak hours and use the playground as an obstacle course.

• Schedule nature walks in the morning to educate children on local wildlife and to explore shaded areas.

• Enjoy a splash at a local pool to stay cool during the hot summer. Be sure to limit exposure during peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

• Participate in family fitness classes offered in air conditioned gyms.

• Turn your living room into a fitness class with DVDs or make up your own workout or obstacle course.

Exercising as a family is a great way to lead a healthy lifestyle for everyone. It allows you to always have a buddy and to make healthy choices as a family. Be sure to be conscious of all family members’ capabilities and most of all make exercise fun. Teaching children that regular physical activity is part of their daily life is a great way to encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle as an adult.

Stay cool and be well!
