Mahtook helps Tigers beat Padres, end 8-game skid

SAN DIEGO — Mikie Mahtook drove in three runs including a tiebreaking two-run single in the ninth inning to help the Detroit Tigers snap an eight-game losing streak with a 7-5 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

After Detroit twice erased deficits earlier in the game, Mahtook sent an opposite-field single into right against Padres closer Brandon Maurer (0-4) that scored Ian Kinsler and Justin Upton.

Bruce Rondon (1-1) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the victory. Justin Wilson retired the side in the ninth for his sixth save in seven chances.

San Diego jumped out to an early lead against Jordan Zimmerman with home runs by Wil Myers and Erick Aybar that put the Padres on top 3-0 in the second.

Detroit tied it with three in the fourth, on a run-scoring triple by Mahtook, an RBI double by James McCann, and a single by Jose Iglesias.

Clayton Richard’s run-scoring bunt single and Jose Pirela’s RBI double put the Padres back ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the inning.

However, Nick Castellanos tied it 5-5 with a two-run homer in the sixth.

Zimmerman turned in his shortest outing of the year, allowing five runs and six hits over four innings. He walked three and struck out five.

Richard yielded five runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Dodgers rally vs. Rockies for 10th straight win

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers found a new way to extend their winning streak to 10 games, scoring five runs on four wild pitches to go along with two more homers from rookie sensation Cody Bellinger in rallying past the Colorado Rockies 12-6 Sunday.

Bellinger now has 24 home runs, helping the Dodgers stretch their longest string since they won 10 straight in August 2013. Colorado lost its season-worst fifth in a row.

Rockies reliever Adam Ottavino (1-2) threw four wild pitches in the late innings, all of them scoring at least one run.

Kenley Jansen got five outs for his 17th save, and hit an RBI double for the Dodgers’ final run.

Jansen also walked his first batter of the season after striking out 51 in a dominant year.

The Dodgers have hit at least one home run in 17 consecutive games, tying their record in Los Angeles. Their franchise record is 24 consecutive games set by Brooklyn in 1956.

Colorado led 6-4 when Ottavino took over with two on and two out in the seventh. He walked a batter and threw a wild pitch that allowed one run to score. Ottavino then threw another wild pitch for the tying run, and when catcher Tony Wolters couldn’t find the ball, Austin Barnes raced home from second.

The Dodgers added five more runs in the eighth, the first two scoring on another pair of wild pitches by Ottavino. He had thrown three wild pitches this season before the problems at Dodger Stadium.

Colorado and Los Angeles combined for eight wild pitches. Dodgers starter Brandon McCarthy threw three, one of them scoring a run.

The Rockies took a 5-0 lead off McCarthy, but couldn’t hold on. The Dodgers came back for their 16th win in 17 games.
