Somerton land purchase on YUHSD agenda

- BY AMY CRAWFORD SUN STAFF WRITER

The purchase agreement for the land for a new high school in Somerton might be approved at a special meeting of the Yuma Union High School District governing board Tuesday.

The board will meet at 11 a.m. at Yuma High School, 400 S. 6th Ave., in room A202 on the second floor.

YUHSD has been exploring the possibility of a high school in Somerton for more than 10 years, and a group of parents has been fundraising to help with expenses.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey 2010-2014, the areas of Somerton and San Luis have the highest percentages of Yuma County’s under-18 population.

The board will also discuss, and may take action on, the request from Maria Aguiniga to waive the teacher resignation recruitment fee of $1,500 she was charged after leaving her position for employment that had better health benefits.

The board may also approve the monthly personnel report and the 2018 capital plan.

Board meetings are open to the public, with the exception of executive sessions. Information regarding agenda items may be reviewed prior to the meeting at the District’s Offices at Yuma High. Those needing an accommodation are asked to make arrangements prior to the meeting by calling the superintendent’s office at 502-4600.
