AWC SkillsUSA chapter back from national contest
Students from Arizona Western College’s SkillsUSA chapter competed in a national contest.
The 53rd annual National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC), held in Louisville, Ky., June 19-23, was a showcase of career and technical education students, the college stated in a news release.
Students represented Arizona and AWC at the post-secondary level and competed nationally in their respective contest areas all week long, AWC said.
“Our students did their very best, and we are proud of what they accomplished. Each student has completed numerous hours of out-of-class preparation and team practice in anticipation for this event and demonstrated the best of the Matador spirit,” said Welding Professor Sam Colton.
AWC teams demonstrated great skill leadership and teamwork as they participated in several written and performance testing events, Colton said.
“At this national level, AWC students were competing against the top 2 percent of their peers,” he said through the release.
“Students winning at the state level and national participation and placement shows they have the skills to succeed.”
New to this year’s chapter was the student team competing in Engineering Technology and Design.
In Engineering Technology and Design, students Pedro Obregon, Jesse Dominguez and Carlos Rivera ranked seventh (out of seven teams). In Related Technical Math, Victor Cortez placed 7th out of 17 competitors; Tanner DeHart, Christopher Buonincontri, Christophe Ornelas and Mr. Pedro Ordaz (alternate) ranked 11th (out of 24) in Welding Fabrication; and Guillermo Perales took 5th place (out of 23) in Welding Sculpture.
