Police: Man left daughter in desert without shoes, water

KINGMAN — Authoritie­s in Mohave County say a 28-year-old man is facing child abuse charges after allegedly leaving his 10-yearold daughter alone in the desert.

The sheriff’s office says Christophe­r Charles Watson dropped off his daughter in the desert without shoes or water. A woman spotted the girl crying and walking without shoes. She took the girl home and called police.

The sheriff’s office said Watson waited 15 minutes before going to look for her but went home after he couldn’t find her.

The girl and her brother are in state custody now.

Boy swept by rainwater after falling into canal

MESA — Mesa fire officials say an 11-year-old boy suffered minor injuries after falling into a canal and being swept by water for several hundred yards.

They say the incident happened in southeast Mesa on Monday shortly before 11 a.m. A woman who passed by reported seeing someone fall into the canal. Emergency responders set up perimeters at several locations, but the boy was able to get out of the water on his own. Aerial video showed a police officer carrying the boy to safety.

Man pleads guilty for use of stun gun to discipline son

GOODYEAR — Authoritie­s say a Goodyear man suspected of using a stun gun to discipline his 11-yearold son has pleaded guilty to child abuse.

They say Darryl Ingram pleaded on Friday and is scheduled to be sentenced on August 23.

Police say Ingram was arrested April 21 after his son told his school bus driver about the alleged abuse. School officials then reported it to police.

Scores mourn extended Arizona family killed in flash flood

SCOTTSDALE — Ten members of an extended family who were killed in a flash flood as they celebrated a birthday in central Arizona are being mourned on the eve of their funeral.

Scores of people showed up at a visitation being held Monday afternoon at a Catholic church in Scottsdale. The three generation­s of a Mexican immigrant family perished on July 15 as they celebrated a birthday at a popular swimming hole in central Arizona.

The victims’ 10 white caskets were placed around the altar at St. Patrick church.

There will be a funeral Mass Tuesday morning.

The group was swept away after a torrent of water from a thundersto­rm upstream rushed through the Tonto National Forest.
