Lynn, Martinez lead Cardinals over Diamondbacks

Rangers trade catcher Lucroy to Rockies

WASHINGTON — The playoffcontending Colorado Rockies acquired catcher Jonathan Lucroy from the Texas Rangers on Sunday night for a player to be named.

The deal was announced while the Rockies were playing the second game of a day-night doubleheader against Washington. Colorado had a solid lead for an NL wild-card spot.

Monday is the deadline for teams to make trades without waivers.

Lucroy hit .242 with four home runs and 27 RBIs in 77 games with Texas this year. While he made 65 starts at catcher, the Rangers also have Robinson Chirinos and Brett Nicholas on their big league roster.

Royals get OF Melky Cabrera from White Sox

BOSTON — Trying to bolster their lineup for a playoff run and beating the trade deadline, the Kansas City Royals got outfielder Melky Cabrera from the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

The White Sox sent Cabrera and cash to Kansas City for a pair of Single-A pitchers, 22-year-old right-hander A.J. Puckett and 23-year-old lefty Andre Davis. The swap came before Monday afternoon’s deadline for making deals without waivers.

“It’s a quality bat, a switchhitting bat, a bat we can put in the 2-hole in our lineup,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “It’s a great trade for us.”

Kansas City holds the second AL wild-card spot. The Royals moved to two games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland after beating the Red Sox 5-3 on Sunday.

“I will go there try to help the team win games,” Cabrera said before the White Sox hosted the Indians. “They acquired me for a reason. I hope to help them.”
