- BY JAMES GILBERT @YSJAMESGILBERT

A 44-year old woman had to be extricated from her car early Monday morning by firefighters from the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department after being involved in a two-vehicle collision with an APS utility truck.

According to Fire Captain Javier Hernandez, the crash happened at approximately 8:26 a.m. at 8450 W. Highway 95, with the woman being the only occupant of a mid-sized Mazda SUV.

Hernandez said the Mazda had sustained severe damage to the front driver side, trapping the female driver inside, and that she had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life.

She was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center by Somerton/Cocopah ambulance with possible internal and head injuries. The only occupant of the APS truck was the driver, who refused medical attention at the scene.

Hernandez said a witness stated that the Mazda pulled out in front of the APS truck, which had been traveling west, as it exited an apartment complex and got onto Highway 95.

Highway 95 was closed in both directions during the accident and subsequent investigation, which is being managed by the Somerton Police Department.
