Editor’s Note: The city of Yuma primary election will be held Aug. 29. Mayor Doug Nicholls and Presiding Municipal Court Judge James Coil are both running unopposed, and there are three open seats on the Yuma City Council. This story is one in an ongoing series called “Meet the Candidates.”

Age: 60
Family: Widowed with five children, 11 grandchildren and two furry children
Employment: Associate broker with Century 21 Action Group and owner of Shelley Ostrowski PC
Political Experience: No formal public experience
What is your background? What in your past experiences helps qualify you for this seat?
President of the Yuma Association for two terms, being on the budget committee twice and attending state and national meetings. Meeting with Congress and Senate to discuss our issues in Yuma.
What do you feel is the most important duty of this office?
Working with the other council members to make sure we have smart growth, cutting red tape for economic development, personal property rights and improved quality of life.
If elected, what is the one issue on which you would focus to improve Yuma’s quality of life? How?
Economic Development and cutting the red tape to bring business and commerce to Yuma. With that we need to make sure we keep and improve quality of life to retain residents and business in Yuma.
What is one thing you want voters to know about you?
Yuma is my home and my city I love. I have no agenda except listening to the people of Yuma, their concerns and keeping an open mind on issues involving our city. Strong leadership is leading by example. I believe in giving back to the city that has given me so much.
