Plunge in pool to help police at Splash Out Crime Night

- BY JAMES GILBERT @YSJAMESGILBERT

Yuma residents are invited to take a plunge in the pool to help Yuma police catch crooks by attending the 2017 Splash Out Crime Night.

On Saturday, the Valley Aquatic Center, 4381 W. 18th St., in Yuma will again host the annual event, which is a fundraiser for 78-CRIME.

From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the public can swim, listen to music and take part in other fun activities at the pool complex in the event organized by 78-Crime Stoppers of Yuma County.

The entry fee is $1 per person and the proceeds go to help pay for rewards for people who call 78-CRIME to provide information that leads to the arrests of suspect in crimes around Yuma County.

Food and beverages will available for purchase from a concession stand open for the event.

Yuma Police Department vehicles and other equipment will be on display, and officers will interact with the public.

78-CRIME Stoppers, Inc., is a nonprofit organization that operates a secure and anonymous crime phone line that collects tips about crimes occurring in Yuma County and passes information along to law enforcement agencies responsible for the cities or jurisdictions where the offenses happened.

If information provided through the tip line leads to an arrest of a suspect or suspects, the caller may be eligible to receive up to $1,000 in the form of a cash reward.

Because callers can remain anonymous, people who provide information don’t have to be worried about being identified or called to testify in court in a criminal case.

An average of two rewards are paid out monthly in Yuma County to callers.

Helping 78-Crime Stoppers put on the Splash Out Crime Night are the Yuma Police Department and Yuma Parks and Recreation Department.
