Gilbert man accused of child abuse after son has broken ribs

GILBERT — A Gilbert man has been arrested on suspicion of child abuse after his infant son was diagnosed with seven broken ribs and a lacerated liver.

Gilbert police say 36-year-old Nathan Clapp was taken into custody Tuesday. He didn’t have an attorney at his initial court appearance.

According to court documents, police were alerted by hospital officials that Clapp’s 3-month old boy had broken ribs that were caused by “an intense squeezing of the chest.” Police say Clapp told them he ei- ther fell while holding the child or may have rolled over on the baby by accident.

But police say they extracted data from Clapp’s cellphone that allegedly showed he was frustrated with the boy’s crying.

According to the Downtown Scottsdale Economic Vitality Coalition, the mall generates $13 million in sales tax per year or roughly 7 percent of the city’s sales tax revenue.

Nearby residents fear the changes will increase density, traffic and noise in the area. A petition to legally protest the zoning change fell through because of recent state law changes.
