YC, Cibola, GR and Yuma High all on road tonight

San Pasqual-Salome is only local game

There’s only one football game in the area tonight, as Cibola, Gila Ridge, Yuma High and Yuma Catholic are all on the road.

There was actually supposed to be two, but the Antelope-Kofa game that was originally scheduled for tonight was recently canceled. That leaves Salome at San Pasqual in Winterhaven as the only place to be around here, though the other four local teams in action all will be playing fairly nearby in the Imperial Valley.

Here’s a closer look at tonight’s Week 2 slate:

GAME OF THE NIGHT Yuma Catholic at Imperial (CA), 7 p.m.

A showdown between Cibola and Yuma Catholic in football would be a treat for sports fans in the Yuma area. But it has been, and probably will continue to be, a pipedream.

So, the next best thing is the transitive property: If Team A beats Team B, and Team B beats Team C, then Team A is better than Team C. It’s a wildly imperfect way to measure something, but it’s the best thing available.

Last week, the Raiders lost to Imperial (1-0) by a score of 55-14. They allowed 525 yards of offense, were sacked eight times and lost three fumbles. Tonight, Yuma Catholic will play that same Imperial team.

“It was an impressive performance by Imperial being able to put up 55 on Cibola,” Yuma Catholic coach Aaron Cheatwood said. “Everyone wants that similar opponent between us two. If we can go out and beat Imperial, it’s pretty much a dead topic at that point.”

This exact situation arose last year, but the results were similar. The Shamrocks needed a touchdown late in the game to retake their lead and eventually win by seven points. The Raiders’ contest
