Afew days ago, we celebrated Labor Day! This significant day was officially established on June 28, 1894, to be observed on the first Monday of September. It was originally known as Labor’s Day. The intent was to honor the laboring force. The concept of work has been a part of life thousands of years. Actually, God established the pattern and honors it. Consider the record in Genesis 2:15. “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden” (which He had created) “to work it and take care of it.”
God intended for people to have meaningful work. “The earth is the Lord’s” as the Psalmist said. God has turned the care of the earth over to us. This beautiful world is God’s gift to us. Be aware of God’s intent that we be good stewards of His creation. We should appreciate earth’s natural resources and use the fruits of the earth wisely to “work and take care of” what belongs to the creator.
God said to Adam, “I have a job for you to do. Take care of my garden. You will find meaning in life doing the work I prepared for you.”
On Labor Day we should appreciate that work, meant to be fulfilling and satisfying, will help provide us reason for living.
Benjamin Franklin, with words of wisdom, said, “The man who achieves will make many mistakes but he is successful in never making the biggest mistake of all … doing nothing.”
The Rev. Paul Killingsworth serves as pastor at Yuma First Assembly.
