AWC’s Samaniego named ACCAC Player of the Week

Lady Matador had 4 goals, 3 assists in 3 matches

Arizona Western women’s soccer player Cinthya Samaniego was named Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday after totaling four goals and three assists in three matches last week. Samaniego, a 2016 Kofa graduate, helped the Matadors to a 12-2 win over GateWay (scored three goals, had one assist), a 1-1 tie against Mesa (1 assist) and a 2-2 tie against Phoenix (1 goal, 1 assist). On the season, the sophomore forward has racked up 11 goals and eight assists in only six matches.

The Matadors (3-1-2 overall/ACCAC) continue their season today at home against Scottsdale.

PREP VOLLEYBALL Cibola 3, Yuma High 0

Honor Owens (8 kills), Rylee Lakey (6 kills) and Cielo Echols (5 kills, 4 aces) led the way for the Raiders, who won by set scores of 259, 25-13 and 25-8.

Gila Ridge 3, San Luis 0

Tayler Ellsworth (8 kills, 6 assists, 3 aces, 2 digs), Shanna Register (6 kills, 5 aces), Kaylin Ellsworth (7 kills, 2 aces, 2 assists) and Katiana Oviedo (4 kills, 1 block) led the way for the Hawks, who won by set scores of 25-17, 25-9 and 2520.

Yuma Catholic 3, San Pasqual 0

Ali Schmuck (12 assists), Taylor Walton (15 service points, 7 kills 2 blocks) and Averi Jo (10 digs) led the way for the Shamrocks, who won by set scores of 2513, 25-23 and 25-17.

PREP SWIMMING Cibola boys take first at invite

The Cibola boys swimming team won the Northwest Arizona Invitation­al in Kingman on Saturday. The Raiders were led by Brock Jerpseth (1st in the 100 fly in 55.85, 1st in the 100 free in 51.67), Jalen Hernandez (1st in the 100 back in 1:10.03, 3rd in the 100 fly in 1:04.48) and David Acevedo (2nd in the 50 free in 25.82, 3rd in the 100 free in 56.89). Those three were also part of the 400 free relay team, which took first in 3:48.07, and the 200 medley relay team, which took first in 1:55.60.

Cibola’s boys team took first out of nine teams with 283 points. Kofa took third, while Yuma High took sixth.

In the girls meet, Cibola took second with 179 points, while Kofa took fourth and Yuma High took seventh.
