Yuma man killed in San Diego County crash

- BY JAMES GILBERT

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man who died from fatal injuries he sustained two weeks ago in a single-vehicle car crash on Interstate 8 in Boulevard, Calif., as 60-year-old Gilberto Sanchez of Yuma.

On Sept. 1 at approximately 8:30 p.m., Sanchez was driving east on Interstate 8 when, according to witnesses, he ran over debris in the roadway near McCain Valley Road and lost control of his vehicle.

Sanchez’s vehicle spun out, careened off the south side of the freeway and tumbled down a steep bank, coming to rest on its roof.

When paramedics arrived a short time later, Sanchez was alert and responsive. After being treated at the scene, Sanchez was then transported by air to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego.

Upon his arrival to the emergency room, his condition quickly deteriorated, and he passed out and stopped breathing.

Doctors began advanced cardiac life support and Sanchez was rushed to the operating room, where resuscitation efforts continued.

Unable to revive him, doctors pronounced Sanchez dead shortly after 11:30 p.m. According to the medical examiner’s office, the cause of death was blunt-force trauma.

Boulevard is a census-designated place in a rural desert area along the Mexican border in southeastern San Diego County. The California Highway Patrol in El Cajon investigated the accident.
