Work on public walkway in Somerton begins Monday
It will extend nearly a mile along the west side of Cesar Chavez Avenue
SOMERTON — Work begins Monday on a new public walkway in Somerton, and City Hall is asking the public to take precautions when traveling in or near the construction zone.
The walkway will extend nearly a mile along the west side of Cesar Chavez Avenue, from Main Street north to County 15th Streets.
It will be one in a series of asphalt walkways — or andadores, as they are sometimes called — being built around the city for use by walkers, runners and others seeking exercise opportunities.
Like the previous walkways, the new one will be 10 feet in width, equipped with LED lights, lined with benches and trash bins, and landscaped. Outdoor exercise equipment will be set up at various places along its route.
“We want to inform residents we’re starting to work on a project that is going to be very beneficial,” said Vidal Ochoa, a city public works employee who is overseeing the project. “But they need to take precautions, because parking will not be permitted on the west side of Cesar Chavez Avenue during or after the work.”
That also goes for parents of students of Valle del Encanto Elementary School who often park along the roadway when dropping off or picking up their children, he said.
During the estimated sixweek construction project, motorists are also asked to obey the reduced speed limit in the construction zone and take care to avoid heavy equipment being used for construction.
The nearly $750,000 construction project is being financed with funds from the Arizona Department of Transportation and the city.
