Imperial’s Steven McCollough won his fifth feature event in the 2017 Cocopah Speedway Racing Series on Saturday night, and in the process closed to within three points of Yuma’s Brett Simala in the race to the IMCA Modified Division championship, with four races to go.

“We’re going to win (the championship). No doubt. And I don’t want to a be arrogant but we’re going to win it,” said a grinning McCollough from victory lane Saturday night.

“When things are going right, they’re going right.”

McCollough started fourth on the 17-car grid, made his way to the front and battled Yuma’s Bobby Horton for command of the race early on before taking over the point.

Simala started outside on the front row and led briefly before settling into third place where he seemed destined to finish until the final yellow flag of the 25lap race. On the ensuing restart Simala faded quickly and wound up finishing sixth.

Russell Allen, from Brawley came on to finish second, Horton was third, Steven Fangmeyer, from Lake Elsinore, was fourth and Rolls Royce Henry, from Boulevard, was fifth.

In other racing action Saturday night, Yuma’s Manny Baldiviez notched his fourth straight and sixth feature event win of the season in the IMCA Stock Car Division, Yuma’s Kyle Smith won his second straight IMCA Sport Modified feature event, and Somerton’s Joshua Cordova won the IMCA Hobby Stock feature event.
