District One meeting to highlight school accomplishments

- BY AMY CRAWFORD

Hooves will be flyin’ at the District One board meeting Tuesday as the Alice Byrne Mustangs highlight accomplishments and programs during the school showcase.

The board usually meets on Monday evenings, but that was changed due to the Columbus Day holiday. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the District One boardroom, 450 W. 6th St. The meeting is open to the public.

Expected actions at the meeting include signing several intergovernmental pacts with the Southern Yuma County Interscholastic Association, and the Education Finance Reform Group (EFRG), which was formed nearly 15 years ago in order to help school districts lobby the state Legislature.

The board may also authorize the issuance and sale of bonds for the second half of its bond measure passed in 2014, declare Oct. 16-20 National School Bus Safety Week; approve a budget revision and the 2016-2017 Annual Financial Report; and accept a School Safety Grant.

Under its consent agenda, the board plans to approve minutes, personnel actions taken by the Human Resources Department (including, but not limited to: hiring, salary adjustments, accepting resignations; and more), ratify the district’s payroll and expense vouchers, approve out-of-state travel for administrators and other field trips for students; thank donors; approve student activities and tax credits; and accept competitive grants.

CFO Denis Ponder will give an update on enrollment and the internal budget. Board members will also view a presentation from Stifel, Nicolaus & Company Inc. on the authorization of bond selling.

District employees will be recognized during the “High Five” presentation, and Marilee Taylor will be recognized as the ACE Teacher.

The board reserves the right to call for an executive session for legal advice concerning any item on the agenda. A copy of the agenda background material provided to board members (with the exception of material relating to possible executive sessions) is available for public inspection at Yuma School District One Administration Office, 450 W. 6th St.

If any type of accommodation is needed to facilitate the observing of the meeting, please contact the Superintendent’s Office at (928) 502-4303 prior to the time scheduled for the meeting.
