Candidate Town Hall set for Wednesday at Yuma Civic Center

Attendees may submit questions at chamber event

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Yuma County Chamber of Commerce will host a City Council Candidate Town Hall on Wednesday at the Yuma Civic Center, 1440 W. Desert Hills Drive, in the form of a “Lunch and Learn” event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The cost to attend this City Council Candidate Town Hall is $15 per individual and includes lunch. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions for City Council candidates who are running for a seat in the city’s upcoming general elections on Nov. 7.

The Chamber will pass out blank cards at the start of the luncheon for guests to fill out with questions for candidates.

Yuma held its primary election on Aug. 29, when voters had the opportunity to elect or nominate candidates for the offices of mayor, presiding municipal court judge and three at-large seats on the council. Mayor Douglas Nicholls and Presiding Municipal Court Judge James Coil were both re-elected to their respective seats in this primary election, per the Yuma City Charter.

Candidates who will be considered in the general election in November include Deputy Mayor Gary Knight, the only incumbent; Ken Rosevear, retired executive director of the Yuma County Chamber of Commerce; former council member Leslie McClendon; Karen Watts, nurse practitioner and business owner; retired Yuma Police Department Officer Gregory Counts; and Kristina Rojas-McNair, a manager at Yuma Regional Medical Center.

Candidates who choose to participate in this “Lunch and Learn” town hall will have 45 seconds to answer questions posed by attendees. Each candidate participating will have three rebuttal cards and can raise that card for the opportunity to provide a 30-second rebuttal if they so choose.

The Chamber’s “lunch and learn” events aim to provide community members with the opportunity to network and expand their personal and professional development. This event is sponsored by Yuma Regional Medical Center, Achieve Enterprise Services, Cenpatico Integrated Care, 1st Bank Yuma and RL Jones Insurance Services.
