Texas Tech police officer killed, suspect in custody

LUBBOCK, Texas — Police apprehended a 19-yearold student accused of fatally shooting a Texas Tech University police officer at the campus police station Monday night.

University officials issued an alert saying the suspect was taken into custody and that the campus lockdown order had been lifted.

In an earlier statement, the university identified the suspect as Hollis Daniels.

According to a university statement, campus police made a student welfare check Monday evening and — upon entering the room — found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Officers then brought the suspect to the police station for standard debriefing.

“During this time, the suspect pulled a gun and mortally shot an officer,” Texas Tech Police Chief Kyle Bonath said. “The suspect fled on foot and later apprehended by ... (campus police) near the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.”

Nate remnants drench Northeast; most power back on in South

BILOXI, Miss. — Remnants of Hurricane Nate buffeted the U.S. Northeast with wind and rain Monday while power crews restored most electrical service on the Gulf Coast and an overdue cruise ship delayed by the storm finally headed into port.

With the center of the tropical depression located near the eastern shore of Lake Erie, forecasters said parts of Pennsylvania and New York could receive 2 inches (5 centimeters) of rain or more. Police in Amherst, New York, shared photos of water covering some roads.

Meanwhile, in the Southeast, utilities said crews had restored electrical service to all but a few thousand of the more than 100,000 homes and businesses that lost power because of Nate in Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Florida.

Mississippi’s worst damage was in coastal Jackson County, where Emergency Manager Earl Etheridge said officials have received reports of about 200 damaged buildings. Some had flooding from storm surge, he said, but most had roof damage from high winds.

County and state officials also are investigating barrels and large containers that washed ashore and may be holding hazardous chemicals, he said.

Mesa police fatally shoot an armed woman threatening suicide

MESA — Police in Mesa say a woman has been fatally shot after she threatened to commit suicide and refused to drop a handgun.

The name and age of the woman haven’t been released.

Mesa police say the woman ran from officers Saturday night and they tried to talk to her at an apartment south of U.S. 60.

They noticed she was holding a handgun and told her to drop the weapon, but she didn’t comply.

The officers then fired bean bags at the woman to try to disarm her, but that tactic didn’t work.

Police say the woman turned toward the officers, who felt threatened and fired their guns.

A Mesa Fire Department crew treated the woman at the scene and took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
