Local teacher chosen as winner in radio contest

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Gila Ridge High School Special Education and Life Skills teacher Tricia Severs has been chosen as one of the winners of the Kidd Kraddick Morning Show “Teachers … What Do You Need?” contest sponsored by G2 Gel Pens.

Severs was nominated by Susan Brown, a clerk in the department, who sent a letter to the show producers and explained that Severs regularly takes her classes on field trips to Walmart, where she purchases groceries for their culinary courses with her own money.

Severs won a class set of Pilot Pens, which sponsor the contest, as well as a $1,000 Visa gift card she can use to purchase other items needed for her Life Skills cooking class.

“I plan on using the G2 Gel Pilot Pens as a life skill, the students will match the caps to the correct pen color, while the gift card will be used for us to watch ‘The Nutcracker’ as a class,” Severs said. “We will continue to do our shopping at Walmart where we will purchase groceries for our cooking class to continue to grow and learn new functional life skills.”

Severs is in her third year teaching at GRHS and last year was part of the Arizona Statewide Autism Project.

“Tricia Severs is an outstanding teacher who puts forth tremendous effort and energy into every lesson,” said GRHS Assistant Principal Derek Bosch. “Tricia is well respected by her peers, but more importantly she is loved by her students. It’s incredible to see the impact she has on her students every day.”

The Kidd Kraddick Morning Show is an ensemble, nationally syndicated radio show. It airs weekdays beginning at 5 a.m. on 93.1 FM in Yuma.
