Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

- SCOTT GARCIA

• Thumbs up to Gilberto Villegas, Yuma County’s new financial officer/financial services director, and Clif Summers, Yuma County’s chief information officer/ITS director. Congrats!

• Thumbs up to the Humane Society of Yuma, which recently saw a landmark event — an empty kennel building!

• Thumbs up to the Yuma County Chamber of Commerce for holding a Lunch and Learn candidate forum to allow residents to get to know the Yuma City Council candidates a little better! And on a related note, thumbs up to all six candidates — Greg Counts, Gary Knight, Leslie McClendon, Kristina Rojas-McNair, Ken Rosevear and Karen Watts — for participating!

• Thumbs up to the City of Yuma staff, for holding open house meetings about the change to LED street lights. Such meetings give residents a chance to ask their questions and voice their concerns to the city, which is a valuable exchange of information.

• Thumbs up to Sunset Community Health Center, which is hosting its 7th annual Wellness on Wheels Flu Campaign starting today. The mobile clinic offers free health screenings and flu shots around Yuma County.

• Thumbs down to Monday’s windstorm, which knocked out power to more than 2,000 residents in Yuma.

• Thumbs down to the news that a house believed to be over 100 years old on Main Street in Yuma was destroyed by fire. The cause is still under investigation, and the home was abandoned, but it’s sad to lose a piece of history in such a manner.

• Sideways thumb to the L.A. Dodgers. Congrats on making a return to the National League Championship Series … but we were rooting for the Arizona Diamondbacks!

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.

DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS OR NOT?

In the 10/11 edition a writer submitted that they don’t use the bike path on 24th Street because there is debris in the bike path. I doubt the whole bike path is littered with debris. When you are riding and you see it up ahead, go around it then get back on the bike path. Another reason noted that they don’t use it is because of safety factor and that they ride 2 abreast. The main reason many ride that way is not for safety, but so they can yak. Another point made by the writer was that the majority of them are in the medical or legal profession. YEAH SO! What, no other group of people ride bikes or exercise?! It was probably those two groups who were the most vocal in obtaining bike paths. Well now we have them so please use them.

In closing may I submit 2 other options if safety is the main concern. 1) Ride on the east main canal and you won’t have to worry about debris or safety (but please just use one of the lanes as the other is for people walking/jogging). 2) Get a stationary bike and pedal it to your heart’s content in the privacy of your own home.
