A local school is getting a new school-based health center and the public is invited to check it out and learn more about what the center has to offer.

Sunset Community Health Center (SCHC) is holding a formal ribbon cutting ceremony for the center on Thursday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at O.C. Johnson Elementary School, 1201 W. 12th St.

David Rogers, Sunset CEO, will oversee the ceremony.

“The services will be offered to the students and families of the (O.C.) Johnson Elementary School,” said Lucy Murrieta, community relations, outreach and eligibility director at SCHC in an email to the Yuma Sun.

According to a SCHC news release, the School Base Health Center will offer primary care services to eligible children and their siblings.

It will provide a range of age-appropriate health care services, which include primary medical care, dental/ oral health care, health education and promotion, access to laboratory and X-rays, access to medications and specialist office visits.

At the center, students can be treated for acute illnesses such as flu and chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes.

Additionally, the center will offer screenings for dental, vision and hearing problems. The school-based health center will have an emphasis on intervention and risk reduction.

The SCHC news release states that the new school-based health center will be an expansion of services provided through the School Health Clinic Program, which continues to receive donations from the Yuma Regional Medical Foundation.

The School Health Clinic Program has been operated by Sunset since April 2011.
