Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to the completion of two road repaving projects in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, just in time for duning season to begin! The $11 million project gave some much-needed love to Grays Well Road and Gecko Road.

• Thumbs up to the Houston Astros for their Game 7 World Series victory! Houston’s had a rough year, and we’re glad to see something positive happen for the city!

• Thumbs up to the Caballeros de Yuma, which donated $112,476 to local organizations in 2016-17, bringing their donation total to $3.3 million since their inception in 1962. Thank you, Caballeros!

• Thumbs up to those who have already voted via early ballot in the upcoming Yuma City Council election. For the rest of you, get those ballots in ASAP!

• Thumbs up to Gregory Copeland, the new superintendent of Antelope Union High School! Welcome to the community, Mr. Copeland!

• Thumbs up to all of our Yuma County athletes who are competing at state this weekend. We’ve got swimmers from Gila Ridge, Kofa and Cibola, as well as cross country kids from Cibola, Gila Ridge, Kofa, San Luis, Yuma and San Pasqual, plus both the Yuma Catholic and Cibola football teams are playing postseason football. It’s an exciting weekend — best of luck to all of our competing athletes!

• Thumbs down to the person who is calling local businesses from a phone number in Mexico and threatening to send shooters in if the business doesn’t pay or obtain specific items. This is a serious, scary problem, and we hope the perpetrators are caught.

• Thumbs down to the drivers who keep ignoring the road closure signs on Arizona Avenue, which forces them to do crazy u-turns in the middle of the road. We wish the communication had been better on the closure, but the signage is very clear. Pay attention, and drive safe.

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.
