Somerton Boot Camp returns in January
Fitness program to include Biggest Loser challenge
Those who put on unwanted pounds over the holidays will have a chance to lose them starting in January when Somerton Boot Camp gets under way again.
And depending how much they weigh, they’ll have a chance to win a $150 gift card.
The eight-week physical fitness program founded in 2013 by Carlos Gonzalez, a Somerton city councilman and fitness instructor, begins Jan. 8. And as with past sessions of Boot Camp, the new one will include a Biggest Loser challenge, with the man and woman losing the biggest percentage of body weight each receiving the prize.
The outdoor exercise program will take place Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. each day, on the athletic fields behind Desert Sonora Elementary School in Somerton, 301 N. Carlisle Ave. The session continues until Feb. 28.
The cost to take part in Somerton Boot Camp is $45, with proceeds going to cover the cost of the program, for T-shirts for participants and an end-of-session awards dinner, at which certificates of completion will be handed out and the Biggest Loser winners will be announced.
“We continue to promote physical activity through the camp, and now also with the Biggest Loser weight loss competition,” Gonzalez said. “We’re encouraging residents from Somerton and around the county to join and take advantage of it to lose weight and tone their bodies. The focus of this program is good health through exercise.”
Each participant will be weighed at the beginning of the session, at the mid point and that at the end of session to check his or her process.
Gonzalez, who besides being a fitness instructor has been a runner for 35 years, founded Somerton Boot Camp in 2013 with the goal of promoting healthier lifestyles among area residents.
Among participants in the current round of Somerton Boot Camp are Luis Lopez and his wife Gracie, both Yuma residents.
Luis Lopez said he has noticed improvements in himself in “physical conditioning, strength and in how we feel throughout the week, having more energy. We even sleep better. That sounds contradictory, but when we exercise we can rest more deeply.”
