Phoenix police: 9-year-old girl dies after crash

PHOENIX — Authoritie­s say a 9-year-old girl has died and a 7-year-old boy remains hospitaliz­ed in critical condition after the SUV they were riding in collided with a dump truck in south Phoenix.

Phoenix police say the crash occurred about 7 a.m. Monday.

They say the 32-year-old woman who was driving the SUV suffered injuries that weren’t life-threatenin­g.

According to police, the girl was pronounced dead at a hospital. It was unclear if the SUV driver was the mother of either child.

Police didn’t immediatel­y release the name of the woman or the two children.

They say the dump truck driver remained at the scene.

Man booked in hit-and-run death of pedestrian

GLENDALE — Authoritie­s have arrested a man in the hit-and-run death of a pedestrian who was hit by a truck in Glendale while crossing a street.

Glendale police say 60-year-old Kevin Murphy struck 43-year-old Paul Hernandez on Saturday evening. Hernandez was later pronounced dead.

Police say a witness followed the truck that struck Hernandez and got photos of the vehicle, its license plate and of Murphy.

Man gets prison for seeking sex with underage girl

PHOENIX — A Canadian man has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for travelling to Arizona with the intent of having sex with a minor.

Prosecutor­s say 57-yearold Dilbagh Singh of Ontario received a 46-month sentence Monday in U.S. District Court in Phoenix. He faced a prison term of up to 30 years.

Singh previously pleaded guilty to internatio­nal travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct.

Court documents show Singh began a nearly fourmonth online relationsh­ip in January with a person he believed to be a 15-year old girl but actually was an undercover agent.

In May, Singh flew from Canada to meet the girl in northern Arizona.

He checked into a Flagstaff hotel and was arrested by authoritie­s.

Social media helps nab 2 Marana teens for vandalizin­g

MARANA — Authoritie­s in Marana say posting pictures on social media has led to the arrest of two teenagers accused of vandalism. Police said Saturday that both teens were identified and arrested thanks to multiple tips from the public.

A camera captured the two teenage boys spraypaint­ing a wall in the Pines Golf Course neighborho­od.
