Who should be Time’s Person of the Year?
List of finalists has interesting choices for 2017
The editors of Time have announced their 10 finalists for the magazine’s 2017 Person of the Year, and the choices are interesting, to say the least. In alphabetical order, the Time finalists are: • Jeff Bezos — Amazon founder and CEO and owner of the Washington Post.
• The Dreamers — thousands of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children by their parents, whose legal status is now in question.
• Patty Jenkins — Director of “Wonder Woman” who became the first woman to direct a film that made more than $100 million in its opening weekend, Time reports.
• Kim Jong Un — The leader of North Korea has certainly been controversial as he ramps up his missile program and war of words with President Donald Trump.
• Colin Kaepernick — The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback launched a nationwide protest against racism and police brutality by kneeling during the National Anthem.
• The #MeToo Movement — The social media movement, which shines a light on sexual harassment and assault, took the nation by storm this year amid an avalanche of accusations against high-profile figures.
• Robert Mueller — Mueller was appointed special counsel to investigate any possible collusion between President Trump’s campaign team and Russia, and so far has brought charges against four individuals.
• Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman — Time notes that the crown prince recently led a crackdown on businessmen and members of the royal family accused of corruption.
• President Donald Trump — The United States president is wrapping up his first year in office, which, love him or not, most can agree has been interesting.
• Xi Jinping — The president of China, who Time notes is the country’s most powerful leader in decades.
Time’s selection will be announced this morning on the “Today” show.
It’s a varied list with some strong selections and some unexpected ones.
Kaepernick’s actions, for example, set off a conversation that is still ongoing and controversial months later.
And the #MeToo movement has been shocking as accusations topple high-profile men across America — and it’s a movement that shows no sign of stopping.
Then there are world leaders to consider as well, who have each made their own ripples and headlines this year. The inclusion of Jeff Bezos and Patty Jenkins are surprising. Both have had interesting, influential 2017s, but were they enough to be named the Person of the Year?
