Drivers injured in two-vehicle crash
Two people were hurt in a twovehicle crash Tuesday morning on County 19th and Avenue H½, according to the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department.
The crash, which is under investigation by the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office, happened at approximately 7:41 a.m. and involved a burgundy sports utility vehicle and a silver four-door compact car.
According to a witness, the burgundy SUV, with a female driver as the only occupant, was westbound on County 19th when it appeared to either attempt to pass or swerve to miss a farm tractor that was also westbound.
The witness stated that, as a result, the SUV appeared to fishtail and ended up sideways partially across both lanes, with its front facing south, and its rear side facing north.
At the same time, the compact car, also with a lone female driver, was traveling eastbound, and was unable to avoid crashing into the passenger side door of the SUV.
The force of the impact was so strong that it created a one to two foot protrusion into the side of the SUV and caused it to flip onto its side.
When Somerton/Cocopah firefighters arrived on scene they found the driver of the silver compact car sitting on the front bumper of a van that has pulled over to help. She was complaining of severe pain to her upper right arm.
The driver of the SUV had also been helped out of her vehicle through a rear door on the side of the vehicle that was facing up. She was sitting in the vehicle of a passerby and complaining of pain to her right hip and leg.
Both drivers stated that they were wearing their seatbelts and had their airbags deploy. They were both placed in modified cervical spine precautions and transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center for further examination of possible bone fractures.
SCFD Paramedics were assisted by San Luis Fire Department personnel at the crash.
