Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

- Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.

• Thumbs up to the Mexican soldiers and police who seized more than $32 million worth of drugs just outside of San Luis Rio Colorado, Son., last week. The bust is much too close to home, but thanks to the efforts of law enforcement in Mexico, more than a ton of cocaine, 28 pounds of methamphetamine and 53 pounds of heroin are now off the streets.

• Thumbs up to the football teams from Snow College and Blinn College, who came down to Yuma to play in the El Toro Bowl. Snow won an exciting game, stopping Blinn’s potential game-tying twopoint conversion with just 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter!

• Thumbs up to the city of Yuma firefighters who have deployed to help battle the Creek fire, located about 300 miles from Yuma near San Fernando, Calif. We hope they stay safe while deployed, and have a speedy return to Yuma.

• Thumbs up to the resurfacing of a segment of Juan Sanchez Boulevard in San Luis. The city spent $730,000, replacing six manholes, installing new water lines and rebuilding sidewalks too. Now, there’s a new smooth roadway for drivers, free of potholes!

• Thumbs up to the Arizona Western College football team, who fell just short of a victory in its national championship game. These athletes had an amazing season, and we’re excited to see how they do next year!

• Thumbs down to whoever has been stealing tractors in Yuma County. So far, three have been reported stolen in the last few weeks. Tractors are not small items … how does one go about stealing one? We don’t know, but until the thieves are caught, farmers should be aware of the problem.

• Thumbs down to the health issues apparently stemming from the Yuma County annex building. Employees report symptoms such as difficulty breathing and headaches, and there have been structural issues as well, including leaks, odors and signs of mice. It’s challenging to renovate older buildings, so we appreciate what the county is attempting to do here. However, we hope their vision can be realized as a safe, healthy space without exceeding budgetary expectations.
