Cibola boys soccer beats Gila Ridge in OT

The San Luis boys soccer team faced its first true road test of the season Friday, against a team in Mesa that knocked the Sidewinder­s out of the state tournament a year ago. The Sidewinder­s passed the test, picking up a 3-1 victory despite surrenderi­ng a goal in the game’s second minute. David Meza, off an assist from Alberto Esparza, and Marcos Godoy scored firsthalf goals for the Sidewinder­s to turn the early deficit into a 2-1 halftime lead, and then Erik Vera added the team’s third goal off an Oscar Berumen assist in the second half.

San Luis (4-0-1 AIA) also beat Mesa last regular season, only to lose by a goal when the teams met in the first round at state.

MORE PREP BOYS SOCCER Cibola 2, Gila Ridge 1 (OT)

Angel Castanon scored the game-winning goal for the Raiders in overtime, the 83rd minute, and they held out for the remainder of the period to beat Gila Ridge on Friday.

Cibola (2-1-1 AIA) equalized in the second half on a Melvin Depaz goal. Fabian Guerrero assisted both goals.

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL San Pasqual 43, Bagdad 20

Paris Montague and Ulyssa Burney had 10 points each for the Warriors, who upped their record to 5-0 in AIA play.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER Cibola wins twice at Chandler tourney

Eliani Neri had two goals for the Raiders in their 3-0 win against Safford in their first game of the Chandler Prep Girls Soccer Invite on Friday. Lizbeth Rubio had the other goal in that win.
