Thoughts on government, varying opinions

It isn’t the least bit difficult to find someone who will agree with you if you say that our federal government — Congress, the FBI, the Department of Justice — is a mess, but the reasons people give for their opinion(s) differ to the point of being opposites. Many of the differences have existed for some time, but seem to have been exacerbated subsequent to the election of Trump.

Most will agree that Congress has earned the title “the swamp,” regardless of their political preferences. New charges/accusations seem to crop up every day — corruption, sexual misconduct, lying to congressional committees etc. — and they aren’t restricted to just one political party. It’s telling that it took crooked politicians to identify other political crooks, and now the accusers are becoming the accused. Karma? Investigations intended to cause problems for Trump have uncovered things that the investigators weren’t looking for. The investigators are now being investigated.

The resistance to Trump has been unlike anything I’ve seen in my lifetime, and it has come from a variety of groups. Some people simply don’t get it — they believe whatever the media (which itself is corrupt) tells them. Others disagree with anything/everything Trump says for no other reason than party politics, regardless of what’s best for our country. That’s pathetic. As for other groups, well it shouldn’t take a genius to figure out that something is terribly wrong in our nation when a duly elected POTUS receives the amount, and type, of resistance Trump is dealing with, and we can look to what is referred to as the “establishment”; they not only don’t want Trump to be successful but are disrespecting the American people. Ask yourself why.

Abraham Lincoln said “This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or their revolutionary right to dismember or overthrow it.” That’s what the people in 31 of our 50 states did. They were unhappy with the course our country was taking, particularly during the last 8 years, and they voted for someone who didn’t look like just “more of the same.” Those who don’t understand that are in the “don’t get it” group. GENE LEMON Yuma An ode to spreading cheer, staying happy

Some day when you are old and grey

You may look around for another way

To rid yourself of loneliness and blues

Please don’t try it by drinking booze.

Or feeling sorry for yourself won’t work either

Getting real mad might bring on a seizure

There’s a simple way to keep happy and fit.

Exercise plus diet and just don’t quit. If that can’t do it we’ll understand By giving a big smile and reaching out our hand.

Many ask me my age and say “no way!”

‘Cause I’m busy as a bee and feeling OK. Christmas Day is when we give Giving hope to others so they might live.

Just look around and cheer someone up

Doing it with love and he will fill up your cup! M.E. RALSTON Yuma People need to obey traffic lights

I know it doesn’t sound like much, but running red lights in the state of Arizona is against the law. (Not so for emergency vehicles). I have observed too many times that red lights are run deliberately, and the sad part is that so many are Arizona plates. Is this the kind of example we want to set for our winter visitors? Remember, these kinds of acts kill people, not only the red light runner and speedster, but the innocent your vehicle has struck down. Let’s have a safe and merry Christmas and a much safer new year. May God bless you all, and keep you out of danger’s way. GEORGE LUCAS Yuma
