AWC women beat CAC on buzzerbeat­er

Arizona Western’s Raven Roberts made a buzzerbeat­er to beat Central Arizona, 67-65, on Saturday in Coolidge. Roberts missed her first shot, followed it and put up a floater that went in right as the clock hit zero. The Matadors (10-5 overall, 5-2 ACCAC) trailed by seven in the fourth quarter, and made their way back. No team led by more than nine throughout.

Roberts finished with 11 points, all in the second half. Destiny Gonzalez led with 19, and Josselyn Morris chipped in 11.

JUCO MEN’S BASKETBALL AWC 88, Central Arizona 67

Lamont Traylor (16 points), Ezekiel Alley (15), Dajuan Beard (12) and Andre Allen (10) led the Matadors (9-6 overall, 4-3 ACCAC) on offense in their comfortabl­e win Saturday against the Vaqueros.

AWC led all game and were up by 11 at halftime. A 20-4 run in the second half opened the floodgates and allowed the Mats to cruise to victory.

Mario Bugarin (113 pounds), Jonathan Ruiz (120), Aidan Irwin (160), Shane Garcia (220) and Oscar Vega (heavyweigh­t) all picked up individual titles for the Criminals in their first-place at the 24-team Joseph City Wrestling Invi-

tational on Saturday. Ruiz was voted Outstandin­g Wrestler of the event.

Yuma High had a whopping 13 placers in the tournament. The other eight were: 132-pounder Jose Bugarin (second), 106 Levi Martin (third), 145 Leo Velazquez (third), 126 Anthony Jimenez (fourth), 152 Erick Cervantes (fourth), 195 Carlos Nunez (fourth), 220 Jayden Dobson (fourth) and 170 Servando Campos (fifth).

Gandara, Castaneda get 1st in Peoria

Aaron Gandara (152) and David Castaneda (170) took first place at the Peoria Tournament of Champions on Saturday, and Cibola came in third as a team, behind Sunnyside (first) and Liberty (second).

“It’s definitely not where we wanted to end up,” coach Mike Jankowski said over the phone. “We thought we’d be able to sneak in there into second. We just didn’t do enough early in the tournament.”

Juan Sierra (106) and Zeke Guerrero (160) placed

third, while Anthony Phillips (220) took fourth and Gabriel Castaneda (138) came in sixth.

Heavyweigh­t Tommy Mommer did not wrestle.

Jaime wins for Antelope

The Rams were at Joseph City as well, and 195-pounder Brandon Jaime earned some hardware with a first-place finish. He won the title with a pin just 36 seconds into the championsh­ip match.

Kristopher Reyes (106) took fifth and Dylan Clatone (170) came in sixth for the Rams, who finished 10th in the invitation­al.
