Column missed with social media comments
Mr. Purcell, I’m sorry to read about your father’s social media delinquency; however I resent your denigrating comments and assumptions regarding people “over 50” not understanding modern technology. I am 64, my husband 70, and we both professionally and privately use online communications.
I am writing this to you from my smartphone while reading the Yuma Sun newspaper which will be followed by my online Google News feed.
I live in a 55-plus community with over 200 homes comprised over 95 percent by online proficient individuals who may have snow on the roof, but certainly have not misplaced their brains. These are bright, active, articulate people up to age 97 who apparently have more wisdom, knowledge and experience in life than you give them a fraction of credit for.
In contrast to your Facebook assertion, most of us over 50ers are active users of Facebook to communicate with friends and family around the world (not to “gain approval,” as we are mature enough to know life is not a popularity contest). Check out my Facebook posts from September and October to see an amazing adventure circling our great nation.
To disrespectfully lump us together with your father is faulty thinking on your part and not a funny joke whatsoever.
Kudos to your dad for enjoying a good hard-copy read or puzzle challenge. It is pitiful that you used him and other seniors as a bullying subject with your article.
An apology is in order, but you probably will cling to your small thinking until you’ve reached a wiser age and your adult children are belittling to you. RHONDA WITTHUHN MADISON Yuma
