Somerton Cocopah firefighters responded to a total of four motor vehicle accidents on Monday, all of which happened in the Somerton area and three of which were rollovers.

According to information provided by Capt. Javier Hernandez, the first of the accidents happened at approximately 12:33 p.m. in the area of County 21st and Avenue I and involved a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

The only occupant of the vehicle was a male in his early twenties who stated that he had lost control of his vehicle. He was transported to Yuma Regional medical Center for further evaluation by a San Luis Fire Department ambulance.

Then at 2:28 p.m. Somerton Cocopah firefighters were dispatched to Highway 95 and Avenue H for a motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles, one of which ended up in an agriculture field after rolling at least once.

One of the vehicles was a white sedan, which had a single occupant, a female in her twenties, who sustained severe facial trauma and possible internal injuries. She was transported to YRMC by San Luis Fire Ambulance in critical condition.

The other vehicle was a black sedan with four occupants. The driver, a 28-year-old male, and his passenger, a female in her twenties, were both complaining of back pain and were transported to YRMC for further evaluation.

The other two occupants were children. Although both had been secured in car seats, they were also transported, as a precaution, for further evaluation at YRMC.

The four patients were transported by Somerton Cocopah Fire Department and Rural Metro ambulances. All of the occupants in both vehicles were restrained and their airbags had deployed.

A witness on scene stated that both vehicles were traveling south on Highway 95 and that the black sedan lost control and collided with the white sedan, causing it to crash into a power pole and then roll.

Just over an hour later, at about 3:31 p.m., SCFD firefighters were dispatched to County 14th and Avenue D for what was the third motor vehicle collision. A SCFD command unit arrived and found that it was a small fender bender-type accident, and no medical attention was required.

Finally, at 9:06 p.m. firefighters responded to County 11th and Avenue G for a single-vehicle accident involving yet another rollover. Upon their arrival they found a white sedan with moderate damage.

The only occupant, a 34-yearold male, stated that he had lost control of his vehicle. He had been wearing his seat belt, but was complaining of pain to his right hand and body.

Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents in the area were first on scene and provided medical aid until firefighters arrived. The patient was transported to YRMC for further evaluation by SCFD ambulance.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accidents.
